Justice Ministry figures show a rise in the number of serious crimes committed in Cyprus from 7250 in 2005 to 7955 in 2006 - an increase of almost 10%. Of even more concern is the long term trend, which shows an increase in serious crime of 67% from 2002 to 2006. The number of reported break-ins in this period rose from 1228 to 3082, and reported thefts rose from 948 to 1,618.
Most burglars are not career professionals; rather they are opportunist thieves. But, believe it or not, most are pretty smart. They will burgle any property, in any area, if they think they can steal something of value. But before they rob a house they case the neighbourhood and look for what they perceive is the easiest home to break into. Part of that process for them is seeing who has a security system or anything else that might stand in the way of an easy heist.
Your property may be in a high crime neighbourhood or in a quiet rural area but a good burglar alarm can be just as important in both. Remember that the key to preventing burglaries and home invasions is stop intruders at the point of entry. Research shows that more than ninety percent of all convicted burglars say they would rather avoid any property where there appears to be an alarm fitted. They are well aware of the risks associated with alarms and they know there are plenty of homes they can steal from where they do not have to deal with the additional problems of alarm systems. Chances are that if your home is too difficult to get into, they will move on to easier pickings elsewhere.
Spending money on security measures can seem daunting, but burglar alarms and intruder alarm systems are a worthwhile investment in the ongoing security and protection of your home and family. It will last a long time and can add value to your property.
The hardest thing you may have to overcome is the feeling that you live in a safe neighbourhood. Perhaps you live in the country and are always home. Or for some other reason you believe you don't need home security or safety products. Firstly, consider that burglars are simply looking for unprotected valuables, not a nice urban setting. What does a safe neighbourhood look like? Is it possible you may be confusing a nice neighborhood with a safe one? Secondly, burglary is not the only consideration: Home safety products such as smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are critical for any home.
Knowing that you have done what you can to protect your home and family will provide you with more peace of mind than almost any other measure you can take.
